shortlisted for his sculptural installations in which
he continues to use African fabric to subvert conventional readings
of cultural identity as seen in Yinka Shonibares exhibition Double Dutch
at the
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam and in Yinka Shonibares
solo show at Stephen Friedman Gallery, London
Yinka Shonibare is
a self-proclaimed 'post-cultural hybrid'
growing up between London and Lagos.
From this position, Yinka Shonibare explores cultural identity, race and
authenticity
through a number of media such as photography, sculpture and installation.
Yinka Shonibare is notorious for playing with and subverting cultural
stereotypes, and for identifying rich and often complex cultural
tropes such as African batik and the space race.
Sometimes Yinka Shonibare is the protagonist of his own image
toying with the position of the modern and contemporary artist
but more importantly exploring the complex and conflicting paradigms
evident in history and politics.
